hey mercedes!
I like Dita too. She does that 50s pin-up/Bettie Page thing really well. She also seems pretty smart. And I love the corsets and high heels. Won't say anymore -- I've copped enough @#%$ on another message board because I make <gasp> sexual references. |

Re: Dita Von Teese | ||
Quote: M., I implied Natalie's P's prediliction for smoking long cigarettes meant she was subconsciously thinking of her old boyfriend. Like Freud didn't say the same thing a hundred years ago? As that article says, I knew Dita a long time ago. When I used to collect fetish erotica, e.g. John Willie, Eric Stanton, Bettie Page, Erik Kroll. As Dita says in that interview, she was really just tapping into a tradition that goes back to the 30s and 40s. Madonna did the same, but (as always) with less subtely and understanding. The Bible of this stuff is John Willie's magazine series, Bizarre, which Taschen reprinted in its entirety in 2 volumes. It has everything you'd ever want to know about 'fetish fashion', and Willie is both a brilliant artist and writer. About the time Willie died, Hugh Hefner started Playboy, which made erotica mainstream and killed off fetish art, at least until the 90s when the increasing conservatism of American society combined with the heavy hand of sex-negative feminism made conditions ripe for its comeback-- and Dita caught the wave. |

Quote: That's actually pretty tame... odd that you got in trouble. poor e. Wow!!! Thank you so much for that great post! It's weird that you mention Bizarre. A couple of years ago I was in a book store looking for (Harper's) Bazaar magazine and the person working there handed me a copy of Bizarre... I think Taschen's books are fantastic so I'll definitely check that out. Doesn't DVT look like a Gene doll come to life?: ![]() |

thanks for the pics, m. I dig those high heels. I've never seen a Gene doll before; but you're right.
Quote: hehe! I think I've seen that mag -- it's not related to the original Bizarre, which was only published between about 1946-56 and only in tiny print runs. Apparently paper was in short supply after the war and Willie had to publish it himself. A nice touch is that he put a verse from Omar Khayyam at the start of each issue, e.g. Ah Love! could you and I with Him conspire To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire, Would not we shatter it to bits---and then Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire! Hey, do you think Marilyn Manson fell in love with DvT because he wanted to BE her? (PS. Sorry, I misspelt "predilection".) |

Thanks for the pics, M.T.
Sorry to be so long in replying. I can't scan any of Bizarre at the moment unfortunately -- but a Google image search on "john willie bizarre" will give you an idea of his style. Why would MM want to be DvT? I'll have to think about that! lol I'm guessing he has tranny fantasies and Dita is a sort of tranny's dream of what a woman is. But then I don't know MM well so I shouldn't assume. Just to get Freudian for a sec: this whole fetish/S&M/B&D stuff is just acknowledging -- reifying or whatever you want to call it -- the power relationships that underlie all sexual relationships. I don't know if women are empowered by it or disempowered but to pretend that power isn't deeply involved in all sexual relationships is disingenuous. And dominance and submission are just two sides of the same coin. High heels can be symbols of dominance or submission; the ultra-macho male can be the very one to flip into transvestism or seek a bondage mistress. OK, I found this funny tribute to pin-up art and goth fashion via Boing Boing: www.flickr.com/photos/dkl...t-1401881/ ... and here's Natalie Portman -- who recently said she doesn't want to wear high heels anymore -- wearing Dita von Teese style '50s heels: www.natalieportman.com/ga...0214034131 ...and sexy strappy heels: www.natalieportman.com/ga...vendetta17 |
