I know MelodyNelson's an Alice fan like me...
Alice in Coutureland Found via Boing Boing: "This Vogue slideshow features Annie Leibovitz's photos of a series of couture designers' (e.g. Lacroix, Gaultier) interpretations of Alice in Wonderland. It's about as weird as you can imagine, and delightful for we dodgsonophiles." ![]() Drink Me How was Alice to know the innocent little bottle would make her grow to such a size? As Helmut Lang watched from the wall, she curled her legs up and hoped the designer's organza minidress wouldn't be crushed by her startling height. Dress from the Helmut Lang made-to-measure studio. Photo: Annie Leibovitz ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks, Merc! Euripides' Fun Facts about Alice and Lewis Carroll* -Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) was a Maths lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. -He formed his pseudonym from the Latin version of his first name (Carolus). -He was an amateur photographer and liked taking pics of young girls (including in the nuddy). He would have been arrested today. -Alice was the daughter of his boss, the Dean of Christ Church. Alice in W. began as his story for her, called Alice's Adventures Underground. -A lot of the famous characters (Tweedledum & Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, The Red Queen) actually come from the sequel, Through the Looking Glass. -He wrote a furious essay full of moral outrage at a performance of HMS Pinafore with child performers because they had to say "Damn". -Tenniel drew the Mock Turtle with a calf's head and hooves because Mock Turtle Soup (popular Victorian dish) was made using a calf's head and hooves (I only found this out last week). *Fun Facts may contain slight factual errors |

Ta, Mercedes.
I saw an beautifully illustrated Alice in a bookshop a while back. I'll see if I can find it online. Film versions: I liked Jan Svanmajer's surreal semi-animated version. Has anyone else here seen it? www.imdb.com/title/tt0095715/ |

more nightmarish take of "Alice", far from Disney's (which i also like!)
i'd also recommend Svankmejer's short film called "the cellar" about a little girl who goes down a cellar to fetch some potatoes, it's amazing! ![]() ![]() ![]()

This is awesome: the British Library rare book site has Lewis Carroll's complete original handwritten and illustrated version "Alice's Adventures Underground". You need Shockwave to view it but you can actually turn the pages with your mouse like a real book!
www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/ttp/ttpbooks.html They also have Leonardo's notebooks and other rare and beautiful books. You can see that Carroll's Alice looks more like Alice Liddell than Tenniel's blonde version. And also how Tenniel used some of Carroll's illustrations as models. Love the freaky long neck.
